For the last sixteen years students from Barre Town School have been meeting during the summer with their parents and working on running and walking one mile. The goal is to improve our fitness and our own individual score. It is fun to work with our parents on this goal. During the last sixteen years over 1,800 adults and children have participated in this activity. The ending activity is to travel to Northfield for the one-mile children's race (walk/run) during the Labor Day weekend. The date of the race is Saturday, September 4th, 2010. Many parents decided to walk/run the three mile race also. We hope you will consider joining our group this summer. We will meet at the Barre Town track near the picnic shelter and then run/walk one mile. The dates for this summer's walk/run are Tuesday, July 20th and Monday, August 23rd . We will meet at the track at 6:30. If it is raining at 6:00 at Barre Town School, we will meet on Wednesday, July 21st and, Tuesday, August 24th. Please contact Mrs. Thygesen at her home at 433-1556 for more information. BARRE TOWN PHYSICAL

2009 Walk/Run Club Our Barre Town School Walk Run Club has been a great success for the last fifteen years. It is run by our physical education teachers, Mrs. Susan Barnard (k-2), Mrs. Laura Thygesen (3-5) and Mr. Phil Joyal (6-8) each summer. We meet at the track one evening in July and one evening in August. The final event is to attend the Northfield Labor Day race for children and adults the first Saturday in September. At our summer practice we emphasis both walking and running relying on the body to tell us when to slow down or go a little faster. The goal is to just keep moving at one’s own pace. Students are timed and recorded. They try to beat their own score each practice. After we complete our run/walk, we enjoy some special time eating watermelon. This social time turns into a time to catch up with friends during the summer. Once at the Northfield one-mile children’s race (for children 12 and under), the goal is to just do our very best, challenge one’s old time and finish! The race is run by the Northfield Savings Bank and they are supported by the Central Vermont Runners Group. We have several adults who also run the 5K (3.1 miles). Our physical education staff always is there for support, both running and very involved to make sure that everyone has a very good experience. Each year the physical education teachers are so proud to not only have our students come, but also to see the older students and their families return. Our alumni are still coming. This year Kyle Wells, now in his second year at Vermont Technical School, was looking for us. Kyle started when he was in kindergarten and has never missed a three mile run. This year, we had many Barre
Town students place within the top 3 in their age division: We hope that you will join us next summer. Please remember you do not have to be the fastest, you just have to come and have fun and finish. Mrs. Barnard, Mrs. Thygesen, and Mr. Joyal |
