Jr. Iron Chef Competition
On Saturday, April 12,
2008, Shane Safford, Cameo Lam, Taylor Molander and Jasmine
Fleury participated in the first annual Jr. Iron Chef
Competition at the Champlain Valley Exposition. The event was
co-sponsored by VT FEED and the Burlington School food Project.
The BTMES Chefs competed against 24 other middle school teams
from around the state. The team had 90 minutes to create their
recipes which were Vermont Country Spinach Salad and Stone Soup;
both dishes were delicious and will be featured in upcoming
menus in the school's cafeteria. (click on each

It's Circus Time!

|
On February 20, 2008, the
kindergarten circus was held in physical education. Parents and
friends came to enjoy the big event. Children juggled, danced,
spun plates, and did some cooperative activities. A circus helps
build self-esteem in young children.
Hae Min Jeong, an intern
from Korea, helped Mrs. Susan Barnard (K-2 physical education
teacher) with the event. Also helping was Natalie Hamblin,
Norwich University physical education student teacher.

Putting the Crops by Kids garden
to bed. Norwich
University Physical Education practicum students assist first
graders. We saved the sunflowers for our new bird-feeding
station. The tomatoes were eaten by kindergarteners, first
graders, and Mr. Kaiman’s class for snack.

Dr. Dawson, professor of
Neurology at Harvard Medical School and the department head
of the MS Clinic ant the Brigham and Women's Hospital in
Boston in Molly Smith's class. When he visited, Dr. Dawson
displayed a brain model and explained the domains and
functions of the human brain. He interacted with the
students by having a few come up and use different parts of
the brain. For example, one student had to close her eyes
and reach inside a basket. She was asked to identify a
stuffed animal without seeing it. He taught them about
sight, and had one boy sit in a chair and hold a cardboard
square on between his eyes. This was an example of partial
loss of sight. |
Mrs. Laura Thygesen's fourth
graders enjoy a sunny day while snowshoeing behind the
school during physical education class. This is a lifetime
activity that we hope students will carry on throughout
their life. Getting outside in our Vermont winter is so
important.

Mr. Phil
Joyal's sixth grade students wait eagerly for the ball to
rebound off the frame in a game of Tchoukball. This was a
new game that was introduced by our Norwich student teacher,
Miss Sarah Chap in grades 6-8. It was a game that develops a
great deal of team work and cooperation as well as physical
fitness. |
