Miss
Ga Young Lee
Miss Ga Young Lee is a visiting
scholar from In-cheon, South Korea, sponsored by the University
of Vermont. Ga Young graduated from Hankruk University of
Foreign Studies, majoring is "Interpretation and Translations
for International Trade and Relations in English Speaking
Areas".
She is hosted by two Barre Town
families and will stay until the end of the 2010-2011 school year. Ga
Young’s two host families are: James and Kim Canavan with their
children Allison and J.J who are students at Barre Town School
and our school nurse Tanya Crawford-Stempel, her husband Colin
and their two sons. Our school is very grateful to these two
families for hosting Ga Young. Her goals are to teach Korean
culture and to learn to speak and write English fluently. Her
mentoring teachers at Barre Town School are Mrs. Susan Barnard,
K-2 Physical Education teacher, and first grade teacher Mrs.
Annette Bisson-Rossi.
Ga Young will be the assistant
director of the second grade gym show. She loves to dance, so
will be teaching our second graders several new Korean dances.
Barre Town Middle and Elementary school is proud to host Miss Ga
Young Lee at our school.

In June 2010, the Barre Town School
presented the Second Grade Gym Show, “It’s a Small World”. The
show is under the direction of Mrs. Susan Barnard, k-2 physical
educator. This year’s show was dedicated to Mrs. Susan Smith, a
second grade teacher for all twenty-three gym shows and a
teacher at BTMES for thirty-two years. She has been a strong
supporter of physical education and she has made a difference in
our school and with your children.
Ms. Alice Thomason Worth, our
principal, introduced our show. She was very proud of the
collaboration between teachers and staff and most impressed with
the efforts of our second graders and the upper grade students
who helped them. It is a team effort that Barre Town School is
proud of. This year’s show
was supported by many teachers, staff, and community members.
- All the second grade
teachers helped: Mrs. Sue Pratt, Mrs. Susan Smith, Mrs.
Andrea McLaughlin, Mrs. Phyllis Wiggins, Mrs. Heather
Battistoni, Mrs. Veronica Eldred and Mrs. Suzanne LeCours
- Mrs. Margaret Mehuron, k-8
music director, Mr. Brent White, band director, lead the 7
and 8 grade Jazz Band.
- Mr. Phil Joyal , 6-8
physical educator, organized the double Dutch swingers
- Mrs. Laura Thygesen, 3-5
physical educator, assisted in many ways.
- Mrs. Sarah Chap directed the
May Pole.
- Ms. Anne Leeds helped with
the art work that was hung all over the gymnasium walls.
- Mrs. Carol Barry, adapted
physical education para-educator, was behind the scenes
helping many children feel successful.
Ms. Paula Gills, formerly
from Norwich University, and local folk singer, was our “
star singer” leading the children in the National Anthem,
and” It’s A Small World”. She sang the “Vermont Song” and
dedicated it to Mrs. Susan Smith.
Sara Bresette, a senior at Spaulding High School, has been
turning Double Dutch ropes for our students for eight years.
In addition, we had help from the Bello family -- mother
Michelle and children Christina, Grace and Hope.
The “mother-of-the year award” goes to Jamie Jones who gave
many hours to come in and helped with all the various
numbers. A former student, Miss Susan Longchamp helped
coordinate the sound for the program.
Ryan Malone, eighth grader, video-taped the show for Video
Visions and it was broadcasted on the local television
public access station.
Below, you will see the slide
show of the different numbers performed. The pictures were
taken by Mark Ouimlet, our official year book and school
photographer. The numbers performed were jump-roping --
double Dutch, egg beater, short rope inside a long rope, and
a single rope. Every child in second grade was a jump rope
star. The wonderful 7 & 8 grade Jazz Band played throughout
the show. We came in a spiral formation around the American
flag, sang the National Anthem (led by Ms. Paula Gills). The
second grade song was called “Lights of Freedom” (was
directed by Margaret Mehuron)
The May Pole dance was a very
colorful traditional number, originated in England. The
children worked so hard moving to the beat. Fifth graders
Cameron Ferry and Jennifer Knowles helped with this number
and it was performed by Mrs. Wiggins and Mrs. Battistoni’s
second graders. This
year a new number was choreographed by fifth grade students,
Kit Gurin and Parker Nolan, who are professional Irish Step
Dancers. Mrs. LeCours and Mrs. McLaughlin’s class were in
lime green shirts, donated by Barry T. Chouinard T-Shirts in
Northfield, Vermont. It was a challenging number, and it
came out great thanks to the second graders really working
extra hard to make it a wonderful new number for our show.
We were so proud of their efforts and our fifth grade
leaders. Our home school family was a big part of this
number with mother Michelle Bello being the special helper.
Other numbers in the show
were: Parachute Folk dance from Hungary, the Korean Mask
Dance led by two seventh grade girls (Rose Meriam and
Mikaela Moore) and originally choreographed by our South
Korean Intern, Miss In Kyung Choi, who was visiting and
assisting in physical education for the 2009-2010 school
year. Mrs. Wiggins and Mrs. Battistoni’s class did a very
interesting weave of streamers to the song, “Proud to Be an
American”.
The final number was all the
second graders performing the Korean fan dance. Mrs.
Eldred’s class was in full Korean traditional costume. The
costumes have been donated to our school by our interns,
Miss Hae Min Jeong, Miss In Kyung Choi, and our soon-to-be
Visiting Scholar from the University of Vermont, Miss
GaYoung Lee. All of these women have contributed a great
deal of information about South Korea and we are so grateful
for their generous contributions to our show. The children
sat and sang “It’s a Small World” lead by Ms. Paula Gills.
The traditional final number was the “Good-Bye” song from
The Sound of Music.
The show was performed for
the school during the day and an evening performance was
presented for the parents. All went home saying, “Second
graders at Barre Town School exceeded well beyond the second
grade standards in all areas!“

Barre Town School is proud to host
our second intern, Miss In Kyung Choi, from South Korea.
In Kyung arrived in March. Her first host family is Ms. Linda
George whose son, Zane, is going into second grade in the fall.
This August, In Kyung will move to her second host family, Ann Hastings-Works
and Vaughn Works, whose daughter, Sarah, will
enter eighth grade. Barre Town School would like to say a
special thank you to the host families for opening their homes
to In Kyung and helping her feel a part of our community.
Since In Kyung’s arrival she has
been helping out in Multi-Grade One and Two with Annette Bisson-Rossi’s
class. She is able to help the children one-on-one in all areas
of the curriculum. In Kyung has also been giving lectures about
South Korea to various classrooms throughout the school. In the
afternoon she has been helping Susan Barnard in K, 1, and 2
physical education.
One of In Kyung's major roles
this spring was assisting in the second grade gym shows. She led
all the second graders in traditional (and beautiful) fan
dances. She has taught all the second graders how to do the mask
and drum dance, a remarkable undertaking which many of you saw
in the June 4 gym show. We are grateful that In Kyung has given
our school gifts of the drums and also three of the boy’s
costumes for the fan dance.
In Kyung has made many friends
and will be with us until February of 2010. What a wonderful
experience for our students to have someone like In Kyung with
us each day at our school. We are all learning many Korean words
and are just starting to understand the Korean culture.
