Miss In Kyung Choi

Barre Town School is proud to host our second intern, Miss In Kyung Choi, from South Korea. In Kyung arrived in March. Her first host family is Ms. Linda George whose son, Zane, is going into second grade in the fall. This August, In Kyung will move to her second host family, Ann Hastings-Works and Vaughn Works, whose daughter, Sarah, will enter eighth grade. Barre Town School would like to say a special thank you to the host families for opening their homes to In Kyung and helping her feel a part of our community.

Since In Kyung’s arrival she has been helping out in Multi-Grade One and Two with Annette Bisson-Rossi’s class. She is able to help the children one-on-one in all areas of the curriculum. In Kyung has also been giving lectures about South Korea to various classrooms throughout the school. In the afternoon she has been helping Susan Barnard in K, 1, and 2 physical education.

One of In Kyung's major roles this spring was assisting in the second grade gym shows. She led all the second graders in traditional (and beautiful) fan dances. She has taught all the second graders how to do the mask and drum dance, a remarkable undertaking which many of you saw in the June 4 gym show. We are grateful that In Kyung has given our school gifts of the drums and also three of the boy’s costumes for the fan dance.

In Kyung has made many friends and will be with us until February of 2010. What a wonderful experience for our students to have someone like In Kyung with us each day at our school. We are all learning many Korean words and are just starting to understand the Korean culture.

2009 Second Grade Gym Show

**please wait while slide show loads**

2009 Second Grade Gym Show: “Make A Difference” honored Dr. Theodore Riggen who has “Made A Big Difference” at our Barre Town Middle and Elementary School. The second grade gym show was directed by Mrs. Susan Barnard, K-2 Physical Education teacher.

We were honored to have in the audience our Superintendent Dr. John Bacon, several school board members, and a packed house of parents and guests, for the evening event. At the end of the program our physical education staff, Susan Barnard, Laura Thygesen, and Phil Joyal honored Dr. Riggen for his dedication to our school and our physical education department.

Mrs. Margaret Mehuron helped our second graders learn a song called “Make a Difference”. The children sang their hearts out and it was a “smash”! The seventh-and eighth-grade jazz band performed, under the direction of Mr. Brent White, as every second grader jumped Double Dutch, a short rope inside a long rope, a long rope, or egg beater.

Ms. Anne Leeds, art teacher for students in grades K-4, helped our second graders with a puzzle art project. This is a state wide project from the Vermont Council on the Arts where artists from around the state and school children are involved in making puzzle pieces into master art pieces. Our school is the only known school to dance with the art puzzle pieces.

Miss In Kyung Choi, our South Korean intern, helped with our show. She led Mrs. Susan Smith’s second graders in the Korean Mask Dance, Mrs. Veronica Eldred and Mrs. Annette Rossi’s class in the Korean Drum Dance, and every second grader in the Korean Fan Dance. The children sang in Korean for the fan dance. It was so great to have In Kyung as a major part of our show. It was a real culture experience for our school.

The slide show pictures above show the students jumping rope, working cooperatively with the parachute, performing a Korean fan dance, drum dance, mask dance, May pole dance, and performing a “Proud to Be an American” routine. We hope you enjoy looking at these photos.

Kindergarten Circus!

Our Kindergarten children enjoyed performing our circus show for family and friends during physical education. Every child was able to dance with a puzzle made in art class. (under the direction of Ms. Anne Leeds, art teacher). This was a Vermont Council on the Arts state wide project. Children enjoyed juggling, cooperative activities, spinning plates, and dancing. It was a fun day at school for every child in kindergarten. The show was directed by Mrs. Susan Barnard Pictures were taken by Mr. Mark Ouimet from Lifetouch studio.

Second Grades Visit Nursing Homes

Students in Korean dresses dancing with fans.    Boys and girls dancing.

Barre Town School second graders visited four nursing homes on February 12th and February 13th, 2009. They visited Mayo Manor in Northfield, Woodridge Health and Rehabilitation and Berlin Health and Rehabilitation in Berlin, and Lincoln House in Barre. They sang and danced for the residents. Ms. Paula Gills came with her guitar. She sang and we danced to her song, “Full Heart, Strong Will.” We also performed the fan dance that we learned from our intern from Korea, Miss Hae Min Jeong. This was a community service learning project in our physical education second-grade classes.

Second Grade Gym Show

Our second grade gym show called It's a Small World was a wonderful success. Hae Min, our intern from Korea led our students in two dances, the fan dance and the mask dance. Also from our community, Mr. Donald Murray played the bag pipe as Mrs. Murray led the students in a Scottish folk dance. High school and college graduates came back to help with the 21st annual show. The show was directed by Mrs. Susan Barnard, K-2 Physical Education teacher. (click on each thumbnail below to see a larger image)

Jr. Iron Chef Competition

On Saturday, April 12, 2008, Shane Safford, Cameo Lam, Taylor Molander and Jasmine Fleury participated in the first annual Jr. Iron Chef Competition at the Champlain Valley Exposition. The event was co-sponsored by VT FEED and the Burlington School food Project. The BTMES Chefs competed against 24 other middle school teams from around the state. The team had 90 minutes to create their recipes which were Vermont Country Spinach Salad and Stone Soup; both dishes were delicious and will be featured in upcoming menus in the school's cafeteria.         Dr. Dawson, professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and the department head of the MS Clinic ant the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston in Molly Smith's class. When he visited, Dr. Dawson displayed a brain model and explained the domains and functions of the human brain. He interacted with the students by having a few come up and use different parts of the brain. For example, one student had to close her eyes and reach inside a basket. She was asked to identify a stuffed animal without seeing it. He taught them about sight, and had one boy sit in a chair and hold a cardboard square on between his eyes. This was an example of partial loss of sight.
Mrs. Laura Thygesen's fourth graders enjoy a sunny day while snowshoeing behind the school during physical education class. This is a lifetime activity that we hope students will carry on throughout their life. Getting outside in our Vermont winter is so important.

Mr. Phil Joyal's sixth grade students wait eagerly for the ball to rebound off the frame in a game of Tchoukball. This was a new game that was introduced by our Norwich student teacher, Miss Sarah Chap in grades 6-8. It was a game that develops a great deal of team work and cooperation as well as physical fitness.
