New Staff for 2007-2008
Julia Bellen – Grade 1 Teacher
Julia graduated from Fort Lewis College where her major was psychology. She received her Masters of Education from Wilmington College. Julia taught first grade, first and second multi-age, and was a Title 1 teacher at Union Elementary School in Montpelier Before that she taught grades 3-8 math, science, and art at Pathways Academy in St. Albans, VT, substitute taught grades 6-8 and special education students at Colchester Middle School. She did her student teaching at A. D. Baltz Elementary School in Elsmere, Delaware.Mary Bowers – Grade 3 Teacher
Mary graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Arts. Her major was in French and a minor in International Relations. She then went on to graduate from San Francisco State University in San Francisco, California. Mary has taught at the Hillsboro Deering Elementary School in Hillsboro, New Hampshire since 2001. She has taught in second, third, and fourth/fifth multi-age classrooms. . She is leaving Hillsboro to move back to her home city of Montpelier. Mary taught a Year Five class in Market Drayton, Shropshire, England as a Fulbright Exchange Teacher. This is equivalent to a fourth grade class in the United States. Before that she was a grade 3 and a fourth/fifth multi-age classroom teacher at the Dr. William L. Cobb Elementary School in San Francisco Unified School District, San Francisco, CA.
Tara Weegar – Grade 4 Teacher
Tara graduated from the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT with a Bachelors Degree in Education. Her major was elementary education and her minor was psychology. She student taught at Founders Memorial School in Essex, VT in a fourth-grade classroom. After finishing her student teaching, she was offered a long-term substitute position for a music teacher who was taking a maternity leave at Founders School.
Sarah Chap
Sarah graduated summa cum laude from Norwich University with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, a minor in Biology, and concentrations in Health and Coaching. She was a student teacher at Barre Town School in physical and health education during second semester this year. Sarah was a Rhoades Scholar nominee, received a G. Max Sanborn Scholarship, and was a Dean’s List/University Scholar (all semesters) at Norwich University. She was a volunteer/supervisor for the Moving for Fun After School Fitness Program at Barre Town this year, a volunteer/student teacher for the Northfield After School Program, and a student teacher at Waits River Valley School. Sarah was a member and captain of Norwich University’s varsity basketball team, a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, and a co-founder, secretary, and vice present of the Norwich University Physical Education Club. She is recreation center director/water safety instructor/lifeguard at the Bethel Recreation Center. Sarah was a volunteer/mentor at National Girls and Women in Sports Day and program designer/media manager/registrar for the Special Olympics Games Management Team.Almin Piric – ELL Teacher
Almin Piric is the new English Language Learners (ELL) teacher at BTMES. He recently completed his ELL Certification at Saint Michael's College. At UVM he majored in German and secondary education, with a minor in English, and did his student teaching at Vergennes High School. Besides his .5 FTE appointment at BTMES, Almin will work as a part-time ELL tutor at Spaulding High School/Barre Technical Center. During 2006-2007 he worked as Bosnian translator in all 3 BSU schools, a role that he will continue. Almin grew up in Bosnia and Germany before emigration to Central Vermont as a teenager. His outside interests include basketball, snowboarding, and travel.
Tina Alger – Speech Language Assistant Grades K-1
Tina is working with Joanne Riddel as a Speech Language Paraeducator working with kindergarten and 1st grade students. She was here last year as a long-term substitute.
Wendy Clark – 1:1 Tutor
Wendy will be working with as a 1:1 Tutor assisting two students. Last year she worked with us as a long-term sub with a second grade student. Her experiences include an internship at an Adult Center working with elderly patients. She also worked at the Equinox Terrace Assisted Living facility assisting residents. Before this she was a personal care attendant. Wendy has a two-year certificate from the Southern Adirondack Vocational School in Early Childhood Education and attended the Community College of Vermont.Jodi Slade – 1:1 Tutor
Jodi will be working with a student in kindergarten. In December 2006 she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology with a minor in Psychology from UVM while working at home caring for her 3 children. Course work included classes in childhood development and juvenile behavior. She has volunteered in her children’s classrooms. She enjoys working with children of all ages enjoying the time she spends teaching them, and encouraging them to fulfill their potential. Some of her work experience has been in flower shops.Kendra Brisette – 1:1 Tutor
Kendra is currently pursuing her Masters Degree from the University of Phoenix. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Social Work from Rhode Island College. She worked with Washington County Mental Health as a Behavior Interventionist. Other work experience has been as a Family Support Work, Millieu Therapist and other facilities assisting children and adults with daily life-skills.
