Sherry Aja, Teacher of the Year

Barre Town School's Sherry Aja was recognized by the University of Vermont as a UVM Vermont Teacher of the Year! In Mr. Crowley's nomination papers, he said this about Sherry Aja:

"Sherry Aja is a model teacher. She is seen this way by her colleagues, parents, and by her administration because, when considering the Five Standards for Vermont Educators, it is clear that Sherry has found that unique balance which eludes so many. Learning: Sherry continues to stay abreast of best-practices. Professional Knowledge: She brings to teaching a long history of serving students with special needs. Advocacy: Sherry calmly supports kids, student teachers, parents, and her administration. Her students perform well academically and socially. This calm, positive, helpful, and professional demeanor makes her more than worthy of this recognition.

Revell Allen Performs at New York's Carnegie Hall

Part of our being “whole human beings” is the need/art/skill of keeping all parts of us intact and alive. Teachers run the same risks as anyone else of getting too focused on their job (i.e., teaching,) and losing sight of their other parts/interests.

Revell Allen, Barre Town’s long-time language arts enrichment teacher has many interests. Among those interests is her love of music. Revell is currently a member of Sounding Joy! a well known local singing group who was recently given the opportunity to perform at one of this country’s leading centers on the arts, New York’s Carnegie Hall.

In November, Revell and her group traveled to New York City (by train), spent two days making last-minute performance changes (and enjoying the city), and on the evening of November 22 thrilled a New York audience with their performance of music written Vermont composer Gwyneth Walker. Group members then returned to Vermont and their homes in time for Thanksgiving.

This accomplishment was not only a lifetime experience for Revell, but in mostly-unidentifiable ways added to the enrichment of this wonderful teacher and her school.

Ann Leeds: Art Teacher and Art Maker

There is an important difference between teachers in the arts (i.e., music and visual arts) who both do and teach their subject, and those who teach but do not do.

Anne Leeds has taught art at Barre Town for a number of years. She is an excellent teacher. And, as evidenced by this photograph, Anne also does art. We were delighted to receive from Anne’s art colleague, Jill Leona, a copy of Anne’s award-winning poster celebrating the September (2005) Tunbridge Fair. (A fair committee chose this poster to be the official poster announcing the famous Tunbridge annual event.) At a fall staff meeting, Tim Crowley presented Anne the framed poster much to the appreciation and delight of the teachers.

Well done, Anne!

Glenda Allen and Dianna Landry

Earning a masters’ degree in education is both an admirable and very challenging goal. On Saturday, February 25, in a graduation ceremony in the Chapel at Union Institute, a Master’s Degree in Education will be conferred on Barre Town fourth-grade teachers Mrs. Glenda Allen and Ms. Dianna Landry, thus ending a multi-year course of study.

Glenda’s thesis is entitled Community in the Classroom.

Dianna’s study is entitled The Reading Connection: Nurturing Fourth-Grade Literacy.

This example of the advanced study conducted by our teachers is a fine sample of the school implications for graduate work. Both teachers have brought back to Barre Town new knowledge, concentrated topical study, and rich ideas for implementation in our classrooms in areas of great needs: reading and classroom climate.

Beth Campo and Carolyn Appleton

Beth Campo has many years of service to Barre Town as our Family School Consultant (and a mom of two former students). Carolyn Appleton is a tutor in our English Language Learners Program, conducts Welcome-Baby Home Visits, and is the mom of four former Barre Town students.

At a staff meeting in December, Beth and Carolyn were recognized for their wonderfully humanitarian effort to provide clothes and family goods to those in our community who are in need. Their work closely resembles the popular Karen Kitzmiller “Coat Exchange” held annually in the central Vermont area.

The Beth/Carolyn twice-a-year “Free Yard Sale” has been held for about four years and was most recently operated just prior to Christmas. Barre Town staff and community members have been very generous and forthcoming with clothing, books, and other non-food items for the “sales.” The second 2005-2006 “yard sales” will be held in May.

Beth and Carolyn’s work is emblematic of that which makes Barre Town a unique and wonderful place to live, to raise children, and to go to school.

Kerri Lamb, Martha Ide, (and Beth Campo)

Some 20 years ago, Barre Town parent David Stefaniak brought community attention to the needs of some of our community families and friends for food assistance, particularly at Christmas time. Upon David’s untimely death, school staff and Board members took up his work and to this day his efforts live on.

This past Christmas, Kerri Lamb again played a leadership role with assistance from Martha Ide (our school nurse) and Beth Campo (the school’s Family School Consultant.) This year some 30 or more Barre families were adopted to receive food and family-member-specific gifts.

A special thanks to these staff and the Barre business community for their generous contributions.

Ellen Sulek

On Saturday, September 24, in a ceremony at the school’s new Community Garden, Selectboard Chairman Topper McFaun and School Board Chairman David Harrington presented to Ellen Sulek a joint proclamation of both boards in honor of our Kindergarten teacher Ellen Sulek. She and four other current and former Barre Town teachers are winners (in different years) of the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Ellen, the 2005 award recipient, is our newest addition to this elite group. Previous winners are Pat Fitzsimmons, Cassie Major, and David White. A runner-up at the state level of several years ago is Sue Smith, a long-time second-grade teacher at Barre Town.

Barre Town is wonderfully suited to staff a very strong science program and may be the only school in Vermont, and beyond, to have not one, but five such prestigious award- winning science faculty.
