TITLE: Tobacco Prohibition     CODE: GBK

Employee/Visitor

  1. The use of tobacco on school grounds is a violation of state law and is hereby prohibited. This ban extends to any employee or visitor to the school, and applies at all times, whether or not school is in session.

  2. “School Grounds” means any property and facilities owned or leased by the school and used at any time for school related activities, including but not limited to school buildings, areas adjacent to school buildings, athletic fields and parking lots.

  3. The superintendent or his or her designee is directed to take reasonable steps to inform employees of this policy, to post signs on school property and to provide notice to visitors and those who are invited to attend school activities in bulletins, programs and announcements related to school events.

  4. Employees who violate this policy while acting as an agent of the Barre Town School will be subject to disciplinary action in accord with applicable employee policies, employment contract and requirements of law. A first offense of an employee using tobacco products on school grounds shall result in a one day suspension without pay and a warning that a second offense shall result in termination of employment. A second offense of an employee using tobacco products on school grounds shall result in termination of employment.

  5. Others who use tobacco on school grounds will be informed of this policy and asked to comply. A person failing to comply may be asked to leave school grounds. A person who refuses to comply or to leave school grounds when requested to do so under this policy may be referred for prosecution as a trespasser.
