The Barre Partnership – the local non-profit committed to fostering a vibrant downtown – the State Health Department, and the School Health Advisory Committee at Barre Town Elementary School would like to help promote fitness in our community! We want folks out walking during the month of May and invite you to come explore Barre’s historic downtown.

The May Mileage Walk will take you along Main Street. Stop into the participating merchants and institutions listed on the coupon sheet and simply have a staff person from each respective business initial their store’s coupon (click here) *. Youngsters, aged 6 to 18, who complete the course by visiting every place listed, will be rewarded with a free walking pedometer! This pedometer will count your steps for you when you walk and is a wonderful way to gauge your daily activity. You will also be able to redeem each coupon at participating stores!

In addition, you’re encouraged to take part in Golden Shoes. For every day in May, two old shoes – each painted bright gold – will be hidden in local businesses as well as around City neighborhoods. All will be in plain sight and handicap accessible. People walking who find a shoe can bring it to the Vermont Department of Health’s Barre office in the McFarland Building at 5 Perry Street. Upon redemption, walkers will receive a free pair of New Balance walking shoes from Lenny’s Shoe and Apparel. Shoes will be hidden in the following business on a select day:

Bag Ladies Express, Barre Books, Barre Paint and Paper, Berg, Carmolli and Kent Insurance, Bob's Camera and Video, Cheap Kids II/Trendy Threads, Chittenden Bank, Community National Bank, Del's Pizza and Pasta, Granite Hills Credit Union, Jerome the Florist, KeyBank, Ladies Workout Express, Lenny's Shoe and Apparel, Merchants Bank, No. 9 Boutique, Quality Market, Reynolds and Son, Richard J. Wobby Jewelers, Rinkers Communication, Salvador and Babic, P.C., Scrappers Paradise, Sean and Nora's, Simply Delicious, Studio Place Arts, The People's Health and Wellness Clinic, and The Times Argus.

You have the entire month of May to complete the Barre May Mileage Walk. Remember: you need to get a signature or stamp next to each location on this mileage course to receive your pedometer. AND – anyone can find a Golden Shoe, so keep your eyes open!

Pedometers may be redeemed by bringing your completed coupon sheet to Matt Lash in the Barre Partnership office, located at City Hall (6 North Main Street). Click here for coupon sheet.*
