Call to Order The Chairperson, David Harrington, called the Wednesday, January 16, 2008, meeting to order at 6:00 p.m., which was held in the Barre Town Middle and Elementary School Library, 70 Websterville Road, Barre Town, VT. A flag salute followed. 2. Visitors and Communications
Mrs. Buzzell thanked Dr. Moccia for reading at the annual “milk & cookies” event, sponsored by the Success by Six Program, held on January 15, 2008, and attended by over 100 parents and children. Mrs. Buzzell also announced that Dabble Day would be held in the Spaulding High School cafeteria on February 2, 2008, from 10:00 – 12:30. She said the event, also sponsored by the Central Vermont Building Bright Futures Barre Area Success by Six Program, was for children aged six and under and that participating children would receive a free book, snacks, and drink. Ms. Moore read an invitation to Board members to meet with Legislators at the State House cafeteria on January 31, 2008, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. to discuss education legislation. Mrs. Gossens announced that developmental screening for children born in 2004 and 2005 would be held at the school soon, and that parents should call the school for information and appointments. 3. On a motion by Mr. Kirkland seconded by Mrs. Buzzell, the Board unanimously voted to approve the minutes of December 19, 2007 and January 2, 2008, and warrants, as submitted. 4. Board Action Items
On a motion by Mrs. Buzzell seconded by Ms. Moore, the Board unanimously voted to set the FY ’09 tuition rate at $7,100, as recommended by the Business Manager.
Mr. Shepard presented, and the Board discussed, the proposed FY ’09 budget of $9,848,321, representing a 5.21% increase. Mr. Shepard explained that despite the modest increase that based on the CLA and adjusted state-wide tax rate that Barre Town taxpayers would see a .02˘ decrease to the local school tax rate for this budget. Mr. Shepard also explained that when combined with the Spaulding High School budget (if approved as currently proposed) the anticipated tax rate would decline by .0021 overall to $1.0951 from the current $1.0972. On a motion by Mrs. Buzzell seconded by Mr. Bond, the Board unanimously voted to approve the FY ’09 budget at $9,848,321.00, as presented and discussed.
Dr. Conley distributed a copy of the March 4, 2008 warning, which contained seven articles including Board member elections, FY ’09 budget, Board salaries, borrowing authority, roof fund appropriation, and use of $160K of surplus to purchase two busses. On a motion by Mrs. Buzzell seconded by Mr. Kirkland, the Board unanimously voted to approve the warning notice for the March 4, 2008, vote, as presented. 5. Board Discussion Items None 6. Dr Conley advised the Board of his current and upcoming activities, which he said were primarily devoted to budgets.

Dr. Moccia added to his report the distribution of a copy of the 1/21/08 teacher’s in-service schedule.
Mrs. Gossens had nothing to add to her report.
Mr. Walz had nothing to add to his report.
Ms. Moore reviewed information contained in the SU’s approved FY ’09 proposed budget of $1,161,728, which represented a 16.37% increase, or $163,450. She also discussed the Superintendent’s search process and interview schedule. The next meeting is scheduled for February 14, 2008, at 5:30 p.m., to be held at the Supervisory Union Central Office Conference Room. 9. Other Business None 10. Executive Session None 11. Next Meeting Dates Future meetings are held at 6:00 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of the month, unless noted. The next Barre Town School Board meeting dates are: February 6, 2008 – 6:00 p.m. 12.
